Parkmyauto Ltd were recently asked to supply an in-car entertainment solution for a BMW X6 2010 (non hard drive) with full sat nav, cd changer and logic 7 hi-fi, with active headrests, our solutions for this vehicle are laid out below.

BMW Active Headrests & Replacement DVD Headrests

There are numerous twin DVD replacement headrests products available in the UK, Europe and the Worldwide marketplace so your choice of equipment if  you are considering installing these types of products for the children is vast.

Recently however, manufacturers of high-end vehicles such as BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Range Rover & VW have introduced "active headrest safety restraint systems" (SRS) which are designed to help alleviate whiplash in the event of an accident and as result of this, you can no longer install the majority of DVD replacement headrests as you will lose this very important safety feature and probably affect your manufacturers warranty.

Active SRS Headrests - The Benefits

Some of the biggest injury risks in an impact situation result from the sudden, jerking movement of the head and neck. The Active Headrests help reduce these risks by supporting the head at exactly that moment when it's most needed. Within 20 milliseconds of an impact being detected, the Active Headrests are pushed forward to reduce sudden head movement, gently helping to prevent neck injury.

Active Headrest DVD Entertainment - The Solution

As you will see from the picture below, Parkmyauto Ltd can provide an alternative solution to the universal replacement DVD headrests by building and attaching an almost perfect factory fit Pod that will match your leather interior and colour and which incorporates two professional fit 7" TFT LCD high quality monitors.  As we are utilising your existing vehicles headrests the SRS active headrest safety restraint feature is not compromised and will operate as normal.

I have seen your website and wondered if you could do me a quote please?

I  have a 2010 (non hard drive model) BMW X6 with the full  sat nav system with 6 disc cd changer and Logic 7 Hifi.

I am looking for the following:-

Front screen display (currently just Sat Nav to have a Digital TV Tuner that works with the BMW idrive and works whilst vehicle in motion?

Swap current 6 disc cd changer in glovebox for DVD changer.

2 rear headrest screens (the motorised ones as seen on your website) with 2 infra-red headphones.

Can they view the tv tuner, can 1 view that whilst the other views a DVD?  Also like to add a Playstation 3 and again can 1 play that whilst the other one watches a DVD?

Front Screen TV

We will require to install an interface cable (something like this) our price £465.00, you would then require a digital TV Tuner & DAB radio receiver with multiple video outputs (to link to additional monitors) installation time on this would be 2 - 3 hrs. This would provide you with video in motion (VIM) TV on the move. The TV tuner would be operated via its own remote control, a remote eye (small receiver) would be installed up front above the rear view mirror (or where you choose), aim the remote control at this and you will be able to move up and down the channels. All cables will be hidden out of sight. Total cost including parts and installation £830.00.

DVD Changer

It would not be possible to swap your CD changer or very practical to remove it however, we can install a separate 6 disc DVD changer (say in the boot) again with a remote eye and remote control and then install an AV switching box which will enable us to feed this and the TV tuner into it which will then give you the ability to have different AV sources on different screens as you require. Total Parts £350.00 additional labour 2 hrs £100.00.

Rear Entertainment Headrest Screens

As nice as they are, the motorised option will not fit your model of vehicle, you have two alternative choices one of them not ideal.

Option 1 - Not Ideal

Replace your existing headrests with factory matching Rosen DVD Headrests. As I am assuming you have the active headrest safety restraint system (SRS) you will lose this feature as we have to disconnect the (SRS) plug at the back of your seats and put a resistor across the plug. In an accident, the SRS would move the headrest forward to help alleviate whiplash, this is the feature you would lose and we would ask you to sign a disclaimer accordingly.

You would receive 2 x independent DVD players (1 in each replacement headrest) 2 x wireless headphones and 2 x wireless games controllers as each headrest has pre-built in (25) games. These would enable 1 child to be watching and listening to a DVD on one monitor (channel A on the headphones) and the other child watching and listening to a different DVD (Channel B on the headphones). We would also link one monitor to the other to enable 1 movie to be played on both monitors through channel A on both headphones. Again all cables would be hidden out of sight. Price on this product £899.90 before installation.

Option 2 - Professional Fit Headrest Monitors For BMW Active Headrests

As you will see from the picture above, this is a professional fit headrest monitor installation which we attach to the back of your original headrest avoiding the need to disconnect the SRS active headrest restraint system leaving the safety functionality in place.

We build 2 headrest pods in matching leather surround (as if it came from the factory) and in each pod we install a 7" TFT headrest screen / monitor. The screens have two video inputs to allow you to attach two AV sources ie, TV tuner and DVD changer. They come with 2 x RF (Radio Frequency) wireless headphones channel A & B. If you then want to add a 3rd AV source such as the PS3 then we would again require an AV switching box. Price on the Pro Fit Headrest Kit including headphones and monitors excluding AV sources and before installation is £890.00.

Playstation 3

Assuming you will supply the PS3, you would require a pure sine wave power inverter to enable this to operate safely with your vehicles 12V power output. this would be fed into a switching box enabling you to then select different AV sources on each screen. The price for this sine wave inverter would be £165.00.

A lot to consider and to take in and I would hope that I have not confused the issue.
